Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
