Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
