Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he finished.
