Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Police state they were contacted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident observed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish substance.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations suggest the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; investigators are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to resolve the case" and have asked to the community for information.
A senior representative said the vandalism left him stunned and had to be resolved quickly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine individuals by a shooter targeting people of immigrant origin in 2020.
